Gospel text for Sunday 17 January 2016

John 2:1-11        On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, "They have no wine." And Jesus said to her, "Woman, what concern is that to you and to me? My hour has not yet come." His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you." Now standing there were six stone water jars for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to them, "Fill the jars with water." And they filled them up to the brim. He said to them, "Now draw some out, and take it to the chief steward." So they took it. When the steward tasted the water that had become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the steward called the bridegroom and said to him, "Everyone serves the good wine first, and then the inferior wine after the guests have become drunk. But you have kept the good wine until now." Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.

Reflection         The man Jesus is extraordinary; he is empowered to do things not reasonably possible because he is led by the Spirit of God. And so his glory was revealed, “and his disciples began to believe.” Water, the ritual substance for the practice of Jewish purity rites was replaced with wine that we know will be the bloody substance of the cup of Jesus’ ultimate sacrifice of his life; the sacrifice he consciously made rather than deny his true identity in relationship with God.  Water - wine, ordinary man - Son of God. What is common is also extraordinary.  

What if we believed that our ordinary selves are also extraordinary? What if we believed that all people are daughters and sons of God? Might we be compelled to live in imitation of Jesus full of mercy and compassion, willing to give our lives away for the good of others? Might we live without fear, free from the bondage of those who would claim not everyone is welcome to participate fully in the ministry and sacraments of God’s body, the Church?

On Thursday Jan. 14 the Anglican Communion voted to censure its American branch, the Episcopal Church, during a meeting in Canterbury, England. The Anglican Communion’s decision to suspend the Episcopal Church from voting and decision making for three years is a reaction to the Episcopal Church’s twelve years of prayerfully proceeding toward full inclusion of all people, including celebrating the marriage of same-sex couples. 

Which begs the question. Do we believe in (give priority to) human composed doctrine, i.e. the traditional doctrine of the church that upholds marriage as between a man and a woman? Or, do we choose to live fearlessly in imitation of Jesus who reveals Divine presence in and of, with and for all people, without exception? Do we believe we are One Body with many members as Paul writes to the Corinthians?

Indeed, the body does not consist of one member but of many. If the foot were to say, ‘Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body’, that would not make it any less a part of the body. And if the ear were to say, ‘Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body’, that would not make it any less a part of the body. If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. If all were a single member, where would the body be? 20As it is, there are many members, yet one body. The eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I have no need of you’, nor again the head to the feet, ‘I have no need of you.’ On the contrary, the members of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, and those members of the body that we think less honourable we clothe with greater honour, and our less respectable members are treated with greater respect; whereas our more respectable members do not need this. But God has so arranged the body, giving the greater honour to the inferior member, that there may be no dissension within the body, but the members may have the same care for one another. If one member suffers, all suffer together with it; if one member is honoured, all rejoice together with it.” (I Corinthians 12.14-26)

Our Presiding Bishop Michael Curry writes, “We are the Episcopal Church, and we are part of the Jesus Movement, and that Movement goes on, and our work goes on. And the truth is, it may be part of our vocation to help the Communion and to help many others to grow in a direction where we can realize and live the love that God has for all of us, and we can one day be a Church and a Communion where all of God’s children are fully welcomed, where this is truly a house of prayer for all people. And maybe it’s a part of our vocation to help that to happen.”* Following Jesus is not about believing doctrine. Following Jesus is about action; action in accord with God’s economy where diversity is blessing and uniformity is condemnation.

Reflection       There were between 120 and 180 gallons of fine wine, which translates into somewhere between 1,920 and 2,880 eight ounce glasses of wine. That’s how much wine replaced the emptiness at the wedding in Cana.  Why in the world did Jesus offer such an incredibly extravagant response to the need for more wine at the wedding? Why didn’t he offer just enough to satisfy the guests? And why did he provide better wine than that to which the wedding guests were accustomed? 
I beleive the insufficiency of wine at the wedding feast makes a fundamental statement about our human condition. We are lacking. We are lacking in communion with the Divine. We are lacking in the joy symbolized by a wedding feast. Jesus’ mother recognizes this lack and prevails upon the divine nature of her son to respond to human need. Jesus, being Jesus, responds according to his own will. That’s the reason for his rather rude reply to his mother, “Woman what concern is that to you and me?” But when the deep human compassion of Mary is joined (in communion) with the divine creating power and presence of Jesus the abundance of wine, joy and blessing is beyond imagining, hence 2,000 plus glasses of fine wine!
This is the beginning of Jesus’ ministry, the beginning of the revelation of the Logos, the Word God, replacing human lack with divine abundance. Throughout John’s gospel Jesus provides “signs” that reveal ‘his glory.” Jesus’ glory is the revelation of divinity abundantly present on earth. The wedding feast, the joining of the human and the Divine, is right here, right now. The communion of humanity and Divinity is not deferred to a later date or some distant heavenly abode. In sign after sign in John’s gospel Jesus overwhelmingly responds to human need or lack; healing the sick, the blind, the lame, feeding the hungry masses. Abundance is the fruit of relationship between humanity and divinity.
The wedding in Cana represents the marriage of humanity and divinity and the abundance of communion (wine or joy) born of that union. In this sacred union human need or emptiness is abundantly satisfied. And more than that, the extravagant fruit of this communion is better than us humans could ever expect. It is much better wine than we are accustomed to sipping.
