John 14:15-21

Jesus said to his disciples, "If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever. This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you.

"I will not leave you orphaned; I am coming to you. In a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me; because I live, you also will live. On that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. They who have my commandments and keep them are those who love me; and those who love me will be loved by my Father, and I will love them and reveal myself to them."

  1. I notice that Jesus knows the disciples (and we) need not to be alone, like orphans. He promised, “I will ask the Father to send you another advocate to be with you forever.” And it seems our culture recognizes the same need. There are advocates for children, people with disabilities, patients, teachers, elders, home owners. There are advocates for the disenfranchised, underrepresented and the privileged. Even Forbes reports on a trend within large companies creating customer advocacy programs. Just about everyone must fall into at least one of these categories during some time of their life. At some point everyone needs an advocate.

It seems Jesus was onto something when he promised to send an advocate…. just one Advocate… to be with and for those who believe. There are nearly 7 billion human beings living on the planet today, 7 billion people who need someone to have their best interest in mind. I wonder how the explosion of advocacy groups, programs and professionals might be a living, breathing and active expression of the Advocate, the Spirit of Truth, stirring among us today? It is right and good that we should love one another as Christ loved us and one way we do this is by be advocates for the needs and rights of others, always mindful that we too are needful of the Advocate.
